The Compact Rescue Robot is a testbed for the Center of Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. It has four fluid-powered legs, each with three degrees of freedom. In order to effectively operate all 12 degrees of freedom from a remote location, the user interface combines both visual as well as haptic feedback to inform the user of the state of the robot as well as the environment. This includes a motion-tracking camera, visual animation of the robot system, and phantom haptic device. Unlike most existing applications in fluid power, the Compact Rescue Robot focuses on a smaller power scale. Although the testbed focuses on robots for disaster response and rescue missions, it could be extended to other applications including service, agriculture, construction, and medicine.
